The Left Turn Novel
If your past VANISHED . . . Who might you become?
Hannah, a forty-six year old author plagued with anxiety, and her partner James, an HR recruiter caught in a headlock of grief over his brother’s death, are as desperate for inner peace as they are clueless about how to find it.
But will they be able to let go of their deeply ingrained subconscious beliefs about life and themselves to embrace the unfamiliar potentials they now face?
The Right Amount of Revelation
When writing The Left Turn, one of the challenging things was finding the right amount of revelation. My wonderful editor, David Colin Carr, kept reminding me to trust my readers to understand and remember things I’d already revealed—to not repeat myself.
Also, as a reader/listener who really enjoys big “aha” moments once I am well into a story, and especially surprising twists at the end, I intentionally held back from in-depth explanations and tried to allow backstory to worm its way into moments throughout. like pieces of the character puzzles dropped in throughout the book.
Immersed in the Protagonist’s Experience
The trick of this is that some readers prefer to always know what is going on. Confusion is, naturally, disorienting. As it is for Hannah. In The Left Turn I’ve tried to create a mirror of what our protagonist Hannah experiences. I want to explore what that does to us and what we can learn from it.
As one reviewer put it, “The Left Turn is an intriguing, immersive and unique read. Becky Parker Geist unifies science-fiction, romance and a tinge of suspense.” (Nebula C. – NetGalley Review)
How do you feel about getting confused in the moment but then having a later big AHA reveal as pieces fall together?
